Union Catholic Hosts Cyber Bullying Presentation

Union Catholic held a presentation on March 1 by a father who lost his son to cyber bullying.

The following information was provided by Union Catholic. On March 1, Union Catholic invited John Halligan to give a special presentation to students on cyberbullying, paid for by Union County Educational Services. John lost his son Ryan to cyberbullying in 2003, when Ryan was in 8th grade. Shortly after his death, John fought for and got the Bully Prevention [Law] passed in Vermont. Since then, he has become an avid protester against cyberbullying, traveling to roughly 200 schools per year to speak on the subject. John began his presentation by introducing students to his son, showing them a video comprising of clips and photos of his son’s life. I heard that this was a thoughtful experience. My child called it "intense". I hope it can be shared with other schools in the district, even if it only relays the message to all those who are bullied that they are not alone and there are people who care about you. Union Catholic Seniors Emerging Leaders Skype with Archbishop Myers

On Feb. 7 students had the opportunity to ask Myers questions via Skype.

The following information was provided by Union Catholic High School.   On February 7, Union Catholic freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior Emerging Leaders had the opportunity to Skype with Archbishop John Myers. The students asked Archbishop Myers a series of prepared questions ranging from his favorite hobbies to his concerns for the Catholic Church and the Archdiocese. Archbishop Myers gave the students thoughtful responses and even told them a bit about what he was like as a high school student. Aside from the Skype session with Archbishop Myers, many UC religion classes had another opportunity to learn about different vocations on February 7, as members of the Franciscan order joined the UC Community to share their vocations with …

UCHS will present several members of the Union Catholic community with awards on March 9.

Four Union Catholic Freshmen Awarded Navin Bros. Scholarship

Four students were chosen as the recipients of the Navin Bros. scholarship. Navin Bros. is the food service company at Union Catholic.

  Rahway residents Bailey Ramirez and Raymond Berry, Clark resident Kristen Nugent, and Colonia resident Nicolle Kot were recently awarded the 2012-13 Navin Bros. Food Service Scholarship at Union Catholic High School in Scotch Plains, NJ. Navin Bros., Inc. oversees all food service operations at Union Catholic High School as well as at schools throughout the New York tri-state area.   The scholarship was established in memory of Mary Ellen Swinden, a Navin Bros. employee who worked at Union Catholic and passed away in the Fall of 2008. The scholarship recipients were selected based on their academic standing as well as their involvement in extra-curricular activities.

Blood Drive Will Take Place This Sunday at Union Catholic High School

On Jan. 13., Temple Sholom will sponsor a blood drive at UCHS, donors will receive a $10 Dunkin' Donuts gift card.

On Jan. 13, residents of Scotch Plains and Fanwood can donate blood at the campus of Union Catholic High School. The blood drive is being sponsored by Temple Sholom of Fanwood and Scotch Plains and the temple is offering 10 dollar gift cards to Dunkin' Donuts for all donors. In a release for the blood drive the temple noted the gift card as a, "thank you for the mitzvah of helping to save a life." The drive will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Remember, in order to donate blood you must be at least 17 years of age and weigh over 110 pounds. Union Catholic Student Plays with Central Jersey High School Symphonic Band

Freshman Jackie Quan of Edison was accepted into the Central Jersey High School Symphonic Band.

  The following information was provided by Union Catholic High School. Freshman Jackie Quan of Edison recently auditioned for and was accepted into the elite Central Jersey High School Symphonic Band. Jackie was one of 110 students from five counties in the Central Jersey area who auditioned for the clarinet section. The top 16 students went to the Wind Ensembles and Orchestra and the next 24 were selected for the Symphonic Band. Jackie was auditioning against other freshmen, as well as sophomores, juniors, and seniors. To prepare for her audition, Jackie practiced for an hour a day and, as the day of the audition got closer, she practiced for two hours a day. The audition consisted of sight-reading, scales, and a solo. Jackie noted, “I …

Union Catholic Senior Named by MSG Varsity as One of the Top Players to Watch in NJ

Senior basketball player Damon Lynn was named by MSG Varsity as one of the top New Jersey Boys Basketball players to watch.

Damon Lynn, a senior at Union Catholic High School in Scotch Plains, was mentioned by MSG Varsity as one of the top high school basketball players to watch in New Jersey. Lynn is 5’9 and 153 pounds, he hails from Hillside and plays point guard for the varsity team at UC. This will be his final season playing for the school. On Friday at 7p.m., the Union Catholic Boys Basketball team will take on St. Mary’s of Elizabeth at home. Check out the video of Lynn’s highlights.

Union Catholic Student Scores Perfect Score on SAT Writing Exam

Senior Rosa Cuppari scores a perfect score on the writing portion of the SAT.

The following information was provided by Union Catholic High School. Rosa Cuppari, a senior residing in Kenilworth, scored a perfect 800 on the Writing section of her college entrance SAT exam. Rosa initially took the SAT to see how she would score without any preparation, realized what she needed to work on, and set to it. She independently worked through the CollegeBoard prep book and received math tutoring to boost that part of her testing. Rosa is confident that her Union Catholic education was a major contributing factor to her score. She says, “My junior year [English] teacher, Mr. Gottilla, especially refined my writing by teaching me precision, and also helped my reading comprehension in preparing for the AP exam.” Rosa hopes to …

Union Catholic Seniors Names NJ Rising Scholars

UC Seniors Andres Aguaiza and Kiana Hawkins have been selected as recipients of the 2012 New Jersey Rising Scholars Student Recognition Award.

Union Catholic High School is proud to announce that Seniors Andres Aguaiza of Roselle Park and Kiana Hawkins of Irvington have been selected as recipients of the 2012 New Jersey Rising Scholars Student Recognition Award.    The New Jersey Rising Scholars Student Recognition Program was established by the NJ Department of Education, in collaboration with the NJ Amistad Commission and the Malcolm Bernard Historically Black Colleges and Universities committee, to honor the academic achievement of high school seniors from diverse backgrounds who are interested in attending a Historically Black College or University (HBCU).
