The Union County Department of Parks and Community Renewal has released details of its annual Deer Management Program, which will take place in Lenape Park, the Watchung Reservation and Passaic River Park beginning Monday morning, January 7. The Watchung Reservation spans almost 2,000 acres in Springfield, Mountainside, Scotch Plains, Summit, Berkeley Heights and Watchung. Lenape Park covers more than 400 acres of land in Cranford, Kenilworth, Union, Springfield and Westfield. The following information was provided by the County of Union. The Union County Department of Parks and Community Renewal has released details of an Ash Brook Reservation Deer Management Program, which will begin on Jan. 5 and continue through Feb. 9. This program is intended to reduce the white-tailed deer population at the Ash Brook Reservation and Golf Course in Scotch Plains to minimize overbrowsing of the forested parkland, reduce browse damage on the landscape plantings of surrounding homes, reduce the incidence of deer-related motor vehicle accidents, and lessen the occurrence of Lyme disease. The Union County Deer Management Program concluded with the elimination of 84 deer from Lenape Park in Cranford and Ash Brook reservation in Scotch Plains. At Lenape Park in Cranford, nine hunters participated in the deer hunt. Lenape Park covers 403 acres, or about 0.63 square mile, in the townships of Cranford, Springfield and Union, the borough of Kenilworth and the town of Westfield. "Those hunters are the most experienced of the 16 men who were selected to hunt in early March in the Watchung Reservation and in Passaic River Park in Summit," said Union County Spokesperson Sebastian D'Elia. I agree with Nancy. Its not hunting when you leave bait its slaughter. Stop all the unnecessary building and maybe these poor animals will have a place to go instead of peoples yards! Too many excuses for killing the wildlife!!!!   more ›
