Harassment, Bullying, and Intimidation Report Presented at Board of Ed Meeting

At the Dec. 13 Board of Education Meeting, it was reported that Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying cases have dropped since the previous season.

Caitlin Taggart, the school district’s anti-bullying coordinator was present at the Dec. 13 Board of Education meeting to provide her bi-annual report on Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying (HIB) cases. According to Taggart, Scotch Plains and Fanwood schools have seen a drop in both reported and confirmed cases of Harassment Intimidation and Bullying for January to June in comparison to the September to December report. Taggart said the HIB teams worked a lot on explaining to students and parents the differences between conflict and bullying throughout last spring. In her opinion, she stated this might be the reason for the drop in cases reported. During the period of January 2012 to June 2012, 97 cases were reported and investigated, …

SPF Lays Out Anti-Bullying Programs

District plans training and surveys to help students deal with those being bullied — and the kids who pick on them.

As part of a statewide initiative against bullying in schools, the Scotch Plains-Fanwood School District hosted a forum to inform the community about the measures it has taken against bullying, as well as measures for preventing bullying in the future.  The forum, led by District Anti-Bullying Coordinator Cailin Taggart, covered steps the district has taken — including the addition of her position — that is meant to curb bullying and prevent incidences in the future, she said.  In the past year, the district has assigned anti-bullying supervisors in each school, developed recording keeping systems for bullying incidences, training for the entire staff and held parent and community education about the steps the district has taken.  Taggart …
