Sequestration Could Mean School Tax Hike For Scotch Plains, Fanwood

Although the Board of Education is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars less in the proposed 2013-14 budget, federal sequestration could cause a rise in costs for taxpayers.

The Scotch Plains-Fanwood Board of Education has presented a preliminary budget at the past two board meetings, which included anticipated revenue and expenditures that could mean a 1.7 percent increase for Scotch Plains residents and a 2.11 percent increase for Fanwood residents, however this is reliant on whether or not state funding is cut due to sequestration. School Board President Trip Whitehouse made it clear that although percentages could go up on average, the board is spending less money overall, it is just a matter of state funding, which the board will get the final numbers of on Feb. 28. Business Administrator Deborah Saridaki said it was recommended that due to the potential federal sequestration that the board only budget …

BOE Votes to Purchase Property Next to Terrill Middle School

The board voted at the Feb. 21 meeting to purchase a nearly one acre piece property adjacent to Terrill Middle School.

A last minute addition to the business agenda at the Feb. 21 Board of Education meeting was the purchase of a piece of property directly next to Terrill Middle School for $223,000, which was passed by the board with one no vote. The piece of land in question is directly to the right of Terrill Middle School where you would say the entrance is, Board President Trip Whitehouse said.  Currently there is a house on the nearly one acre property, which will have to be removed, according to Business Administrator Deborah Saridaki. Whitehouse added that the contract to purchase the property is dependent on it adhering to all environmental standards. Initially, Whitehouse said he was not in support of the purchase of the land and did not think …

Having attended this meeting, the rationale behind the acquisition made a certain amount of sense although I am taking the cost portion on faith. In real estate location is everything, and the lot is strategically situated. Short-term, the acquisition allows the Board to address a real safety issue. Longer-term, the acquisition also purchases a certain amount of time and planning flexibility. It …   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Fanwood Resident Speaks Out Against BOE Everyday Math Decision

Michael Lewis of Fanwood is hoping the Board of Ed will not "rush judgement" on updating the Math Curriculum with a new version of "Everyday Math."

(Letter to the Editor) To the Scotch Plains - Fanwood Board of Education:   I am writing today in an attempt to forestall a "rush to judgment" on the merits of updating a Math Curriculum based on "Everyday Math".   My personal disdain for the program is no secret.  I have no doubt that is is both easier and less expensive to implement an update as to install a completely new program.  Moreover, I have come to the conclusion that there is actually a certain amount of parental support for "Everyday Math".  Finally, by all appearances our students are testing in a satisfactory manner.   It is precisely because of these factors that the accompanying report by the Bridgewater-Raritan School District is so interesting. If one reads the first …
