Residents Come Together for Annual SPF MLK Day of Service

The 2013 Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service was successful once again in Scotch Plains and Fanwood.

Although this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day was not a full day off, the half-day did not stop residents from coming out to volunteer once the kids were let out of school. Online registration was lower this year, according to one of the coordinators, Michelle Shapiro, but she said she felt a lot of people were still coming and signing up for same-day registration. Shapiro said last year somewhere around 600-700 people registered online for events, whereas this year it went down to 300-400.  She pointed out that having the half-day of school definitely contributed to the drop in numbers. MLK Day of Service Dedicates Events to Victims of Hurricane Sandy and Newtown Shooting

Coordinators of the Fourth Annual MLK Day of Service look forward to volunteer opportunities that are close to home.

Although many different opportunities are available on the fourth annual MLK Day of Service, co-chair Courtney Agnello most looks forward to the service opportunities to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy and the Newtown shooting. From 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Bigg Playdate on 1730 East Second Street in Scotch Plains, volunteers can bring donations for victims of Hurricane Sandy. Music will be playing at Bigg while volunteers are welcomed to make crafts for the victims. Located in the multi-purpose room of Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School, volunteers can write messages of hope for families, friends and teachers in Newtown, Connecticut.
