On the article SP Council Discusses Adoption of 2013 Council Rules and Regulations
Just the facts

ReplyI believe that Robert's Rules of Order allow any Council Member to request that an item be removed from the consent agenda for the purpose of discussion and that no items involving a roll call vote e.g. financial expenditures, can be included in the constent agenda. This is a common practice for many meetings and if these two items are understood and acknowledge it should also eliminate any concerns that items are being voted on without full input. It's amazing how many things must be voted on that are "routine" but that being the case, there is nothing to prevent it being done as just one vote via a consent agenda.

ReplyAlas, the burning barrel would probably not be permitted in todays Environment....from both a safety and air quality perspective and that is a sad thing. As for the music.....what would you play? Can't see skating to rap or some of the hard rock stuff....maybe that stuff from the 50's and 60's would be just as appropriate today.....my days of balancing on a pair of skates is long over....so hope everyone has a good time and builds similar good memories as those posted above....really love the story and the perspective!

On the article Fanwood Mayor Colleen Mahr Will Travel to Washington to Discuss Gun Laws
Just the facts

ReplyI absolutely would say "let it be!" To quote Margaret Mead "Never believe that a few caring people can't change the world. For, indeed, that's all who ever have." Mayor Mahr or any individual for that matter never does it alone, but, if her voice can be raised to mobilize others into action...then I for one say more power to her!

On the article Fanwood Mayor Colleen Mahr Will Travel to Washington to Discuss Gun Laws
Just the facts

ReplyIt never ceases to amaze me, as demonstrated by the comments here, that our elected leadership or any citizen for that matter, can have but one perspective or can only be involved in one item at any given time.
To address several points raised in this string; I agree that mental illness issues, guns, taxes, etc. all need to be addressed and believe it or not believe that our mayor is capable of taking on more than one task at a time. As an ordinary citizen I might be motivated to attend, but the opportunity is only open to Mayor's, so, I for one am glad her reasonable and intelligent voice will be among those heard. So, for her to attend a meeting in Washington is just another issue she must feel is important enough to spend her time and energy.
Furthermore, guns do come into Fanwood! Just only last summer there was a gun incident whereby a resident took some shots at a neighbors fence and let's not forget a tragic murder/suicide that occurred less than 10 years ago in the borough. Additionally, we live adjacent to Plainfield, a city, not unlike Newark and Camden with a recently rising incident of gun violence, how long before some of that spills over into the borough.
Finally, unless you stay within the borough limits 24/7 guns are everywhere. This is not about just protecting Fanwood residents in Fanwood, but whereever we may travel. So, if our Mayor wishes to use her time to speak out on issues that are important to her and others...let it be!

On the article Courage to Re-Connect Announces Commissioners for Consolidation Study
Just the facts
2:02 pm on Sunday, December 23, 2012
ReplyLet's all pay attention and keep an eye on the big picture. The purpose of this group is to identify if any money can be saved through a consolidation of the two towns. I can almost predict that they will finalize their report that money can be saved....even if it's only a $1. The issue will be put to vote and if I follow the comments...Fanwoodians are leaning towards a "thanks, but no thanks" decision. The kicker is that the Trenton says if you say "no" to savings....well, you get punished by being ineligible for state aid, grants, etc....so, at the end of the day, Fanwoodians will pay more in the way of taxes as a way of punishment from Trenton.
You can have who ever you want on that committee, but every resident better look closely at the details of the final product, be prepared to ask serious questions about how they arrived at their numbers and more importantly, look at things that are done by volunteers (fire and rescue) or at a cost that will not be sustained going forward (paid elected representatives comes to the top of the list) and ensure they are included in the final report (and are projected out over a 5 and/or 10 year period).
This is only the tip of the iceberg....let's hope that this committee is transparent and posts all of their data, meeting minutes, etc on line and that all meetings are open to the public.

ReplyNice to have a name, but any chance we can have a little background information as to their experience and qualifications? If the committee is to have balanced representation, would it not have been better to work with both municipal appointments to ensure that all of the necessary skill sets were addressed and included?

Just the facts

ReplySome how the challenges of the past few weeks should give even more reason and clarity why this group should simply dissolve and not move forward with this study. The disparate differences in both leadership and community spirit were clearly evident and both communities have more to gain or lose than a few tax dollars when a crisis arises.

ReplyAgree Michael....
but, I think one of the key elements that keeps getting overlooked is that not only does the commission generate the study, they, ultimately have to DECIDE if the analysis of the facts are sufficient to generate a voter referendum. The fact that they keep indicating that voters actually will make the final decision assumes a foregone conclusion, that the results will generate sufficient justification that will mandate a community vote....and that is not true! The continuing concern is that if you look for opportunities and justifications you will find them.....I hope they give as much weight and research to the "cons" of consolidation as they will obviously be giving to the "pros."
