Spotlight On Dyslexia

Spotlight on Dyslexia

Spotlight on Dyslexia is a free half-day conference (8:00 am to 12:30 pm) for parents, students and educators scheduled for October 5th, 2013 at Union Catholic High School (1600 Martine Ave, Scotch Plains, NJ 07076) The purpose of the conference is to bring awareness of dyslexia to the public and to provide resources to those directly connected with a dyslexic child.

This event has been organized by 17-year old dyslexic student, Will Marsh, a senior at Union Catholic High School in Scotch Plains, NJ.  In October 2012, Will discussed his idea of having a dyslexia event with Dana Marsh, his mom and Kathy Bentley, the teacher in his elementary school who was the pivotal person in helping him on his path to success when he was in 3rd grade. They thought it was a great idea, but did not know where it could be held.

Will approached the administration at Union Catholic High School and they agreed to host the event, offering incredible support every step of the way. Christine McCoid, Assistant Principal and Jennifer Dixon, Assistant Guidance Director at UC, have guided Will in the planning process. The entire UC community is centered by the desire to achieve the five core values that define the school’s mission:  Responsibility, Respect, Community, Compassion and Honesty.  Both Will and the school feel strongly that several of these values are demonstrated in the planning and implementation of this event.

Our sponsors include Union Catholic High School, Learning Disabilities Association of America's Foundation, Decoding Dyslexia-NJLearning Ally, and the Scottish Rite's Children's Dyslexia Center-Scotch Plains Campus.
