Gibbs Helps U.S. Team Win First Gold Medal in 18 Years

The U.S. Men's Under-19 National Basketball Team beat Greece in the finals.

If being on the U.S. Men's Under-19 National Basketball Team wasn't a big enough honor for Scotch Plains' teen Ashton Gibbs, then being a part of the team's accomplishment certainly should be.

The U.S. team won the gold medal this past Saturday in an 88-80 game against Greece in the FIBA Under-19 World championship in Auckland, New Zealand. This was the first time the U.S. has captured that title since 1991.

Gibbs, a Scotch Plains native and University of Pittsburgh sophomore, was one of 12 players named to the U-19 team. According to ESPN.com, Greece was close to gaining a lead during the third quarter of the game, but points by Gibbs helped the U.S. maintain their advantage in the final period.
