Fanwood Poetry Series Tribute to Jack Wiler

The Carriage House Poetry Series invites you to attend a free poetry reading on Tuesday, December 15, at 8:00 p.m. in the Patricia Kuran Arts Center on Watson Road, off North Martine Avenue, adjacent to Fanwood Borough Hall. (GPS use 75 N. Martine Avenue). The reading will begin with music by Bob Andrews, accompanied by Peter Hagen, followed by a memorial tribute to the late New Jersey poet, Jack Wiler. Featured readers will be the distinguished poets Teresa Carson and John McDermott, who will share reminiscences of Jack Wiler and read from his poems, as well as from their own.

Bob Andrews' songs draw on both the light and the dark side of everyday life. He weaves his writing around themes of hope, humor and healing. A preview of Bob's songs may be heard at http://www.bobandrews.info/music.html.

Teresa Carson grew up in Jersey City, as the youngest of ten in a blue-collar family. At the age of 18 she was one of the first women hired by the local phone company to work in a technical job. For the next 31 years she worked in non-traditional union/management, technical/administrative positions for the phone company before retiring in 2003. Teresa earned a Master's degree in Poetry in 2004 from Sarah Lawrence College and her book, "Elegy for the Floater," was published in 2008.

John McDermott is a poet and educator who taught for four years at Dong Nan University in Nanjing, China, and at schools in Osaka City, Japan. He is an associate professor of English as a Second Language at Union County College and a former editor of U.S. 1 Worksheets. John is a long-time poet for the Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Program. Widely published in magazines and journals, his poetry collections include "Bits and Pieces," "Along the Way," and "The Long Way Home."

With this reading , the Carriage House Poetry Series begins its12th year at the Kuran Arts Center, an historic Gothic Revival structure that was once a 19th century carriage house, hence the name of the series.

The Dec. 15th reading is free and open to the public. An open mic will follow the featured performance, so bring a poem of your own and join in the reading.
