Editor's Notebook: Week in Review

A look back at the past week's news and events.

This week we saw much of the news center around the schools. Information continued to come out from the district about what impact cuts to the 2010-2011 budget could have on classes, programs and taxpayers' pockets. Meanwhile, student athletes kept their focus on getting off to strong spring seasons.

Here's a look back.

On Monday, we brought you our first in a series of profiles of the school board candidates. We started with incumbent and Fanwood resident Amy Winkler. We also reported from the Union County GOP convention last weekend, where the Republicans endorsed Rep. Leonard Lance and several other local candidates; provided photos from the Easter bunny's visit to Fanwood; and gave you a preview of the Raiders baseball season.

Tuesday we continued our school board candidate profiles with a look at Chris Pflaum, a Rutgers student and recent SPFHS grad who's running for the open 3-year Fanwood term. We also broke down recent state data that revealed how much the school district spends per student, teacher salaries and more. Flooding caused the Route 22 W ramp in Scotch Plains to shut down temporarily that day. We also gave you an early look at the Raiders softball season.

On Wednesday we introduced you to Michael Lewis, the final Fanwoodian running for the open 3-year term on the Board of Education. We also gave you the breakdown of the 2010-2011 school district budget, a preview of the Raiders lacrosse season, and the recent Fanwood police reports.

On Thursday, we gave you the Scotch Plains police reports from the last week; a full update on the Board of Education budget hearing the night before; and a preview of the Raiders boys tennis season.

Friday, we had Scotch Plains Mayor Nancy Malool make a bet with Summit Mayor Jordan Glatt as to whether Duke or West Virginia would win the NCAA semfinals on Saturday (Duke has an SP native; West Virginia a Summit one). We also previewed the Union Catholic boys baseball season and reported from the scene of a home fire in Fanwood that evening.
