Mickey Mouse? John Doe? A Look at Election Write-Ins

98 write-in votes were cast during the annual school election.

There's no question a majority of Scotch Plains-Fanwood voters were seeking a change when they voted down the school budget on April 20. But the same can't be said for the Board of Education vote: four seats were up for grabs, and all were won by incumbents.

Not everyone accepted the options in front of them, though. Thirty-nine voters in Fanwood and 59 in Scotch Plains elected to write in their own picks. Many casted votes for other local residents, but a few went the fictional route. Mickey Mouse got a nod in Fanwood's first and second district. Joe, Larry and Mo Stooge each got votes in Scotch Plains' District 3.

The Jersey Guys from 101.5 FM garnered a good number of write-ins in Fanwood. Radio personality Casey Bartholomew got four votes — in Districts 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 — and Ray Rossi got two votes in Districts 4 and 5.

Gov. Chris Christie won a few of his own as well. The Republican governor, whose home is in Mendham, got two votes in the borough. But, by and large, the individual with the most write-ins in Fanwood was no one at all, literally. "No one," "none," "none of the above," and "nobody" received eight votes. Similarly, John Doe got two.

With the exception of the Stooges, Scotch Plains voters chose to write in mostly all locals.

Rescue Squad member and local autism activist Antonio Robertiello got the most write-ins at 10. Voters in District 3, 4, 5, 9, 16, 17 and 18 all gave him a nod.

Three current BOE members, whose seats weren't up for re-election this year, still grabbed several of the votes. Karen Kulikowski got six write-ins, while Betty Anne Woerner and Trip Whitehouse each got four.

Here's a full look at what your neighbors chose to write in on their ballots. (All names are written exactly as they were printed on records from the two municipal clerks.)
