Snow Storm Continues to Impact Scotch Plains-Fanwood

The storm warning is still in effect through 6 a.m. Saturday.

Snow continues to fall across the Scotch Plains-Fanwood area, but how much we'll have by the end of the storm remains to be seen. 

The National Weather Service's latest report at 12:56 p.m. still had snow totals for our area at 12 to 18 inches, with some places getting hit with as much as two feet. One Fanwood resident reported 9 inches of snow at his home. How much do you have? Let us know at lindsay@patch.com.

NJ Transit reports this afternoon that it will be modifying its rail service due to low ridership. Trains may be combined or canceled. As of 5:30 a.m., NJ Transit had suspended all bus service in North Jersey. Service was restored to most lines at 1 p.m.

The storm has canceled many local events, but the SP-F Ice Hockey Association reports that it's still moving forward with its winter gala planned for tonight. 

Little Shop of Comics in downtown Scotch Plains has closed for the rest of the day and its Board Game Night and Friday Night Magic events have been canceled. Store Owner Steven Olsen told Patch his store will reopen at 10 a.m. Saturday, with all scheduled events taking place.

The F-SP Brownie Scouts 2-3 "Me and My Guy" Dance for tonight has been canceled. It will now be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. this Sunday at Union Catholic High.

Scotch Plains Public Library and Fanwood Memorial Library are closed today, but some municipal offices are open. Fanwood Clerk Eleanor McGovern told Patch that borough offices will remain open today. Scotch Plains municipal offices closed at 11 a.m.

The Scotch Plains-Fanwood Public Schools are also closed due to the heavy snow storm that continues to impact our area.

While many North Jersey districts made the announcement last night, the SP-F district waited until about 5 a.m. today to make the official call. Union Catholic High, the Union County Vocational-Technical Schools, and St. Bartholomew Academy will all also be closed today due to the inclement weather.

Some readers have reported down tree limbs, but Fanwood Police said this morning that there'd been no major incidents to report yet for Friday. The borough had one minor weather-related motor vehicle accident on Thursday. Scotch Plains Police said there have been no incidents in the township, either. As of 9:30 a.m., A&P Grocery in Fanwood and CVS Pharmacy in Scotch Plains both remained open.

As the storm continues to move over our area, the National Weather Service warns of wind gusts of up to 45 miles per hour that will result in blowing and drifting of the snow and cause visibility to occasionally be below a quarter of a mile. 

The snow is expected to lighten up through the night.
