MLK Day Committee Looking for Participants

The group is continuing to move forward with the planning process.

The committee planning Scotch Plains-Fanwood's first MLK Day of Service is seeking organizations and volunteers to help.

While the event is still in its early planning stages, the group is requesting that any person or organization that's interested in hosting a project to contact them so that they can be added to an early mailing list. Volunteers interested in helping with the planning process are also needed.

“We are looking to local volunteer and direct service organizations to plan activities for the day," said committee co-chair Michelle Abraham. "The committee is creating the structure and advertising, but we are hoping to bring in all different groups to make the day a success."

Sponsored by the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Ministerium, the MLK Day of Service is intended to bring the community together to serve and learn about ways to give back throughout the year. Similar events are held in towns across the country each year, but this will be the first time Scotch Plains and Fanwood have hosted one. It will be held on Monday, Jan. 18, 2010.

“We couldn’t be more excited,” said co-chair Laura McQuaid. “The response has been amazing with people stepping up from all over to make this day happen.”
